Are you talking about the glow plugs harness or the main harness. I just asked the shop about this and they said the injector portion of the harness is not separate from the main harness but the glow plugs harness is. They have not gotten me an estimate yet but it sounds like the main harness adds a lot of labor to the job
Main harness is going to be a lot easier with the engine out. But yes the glow plug harness has brittle plastic connectors.

Yes, mainly due to chafing and heat. The heat makes all the connections many of which are brittle and the chafing is because the engine is crammed into a rather tight engine bay. A good rule of thumb in high rub areas such as around brackets is to wrap the harness with electrical tape or spiral wrap tubing or something similar.

Hmm, I'm assuming the labor is significantly less to replace the harness while doing the injectors. In your opinion is it worth spending a couple thousand more to get the harness done on a rig that is 14 years old but otherwise has no electrical issues.

YES. You might not have any now, but a lot of those gremlins start when because of injector or other work. The heat trapped in the engine bay bakes the harnesses more than just about any other motor.

To be honest I'm not sure how easy it would be unless the engine was out. That's when I replaced my harness. The injectors are a PIA on the passenger side because you have to raise the engine slightly to remove the engine mount and then lower it to gain the access. But not sure any of that makes replacement of the harness any easier. A question for your mechanic.
