Perhaps lose the K&N ??
Donaldson or Motorcraft filters test out to be superior.

My dad's van is just like this too. The Triton motors get some valve carbon buildup when they aren't worked hard, and this carbon glows red hot, which is what causes the pinging in this case. Hooking up a trailer and pulling it over a mountain pass will ofter clear that issue up, for a while at least.

When it's caused by a fouled MAF however, it'll need 92 octane to keep it at bay, and that won't even work when it's fouled badly enough.

Mine still pings with 91. I put in some injector cleaner and 91 to see if it would help. Nothing really changed.

I'll try to take it up the grade this weekend and see if it's still pinging with the cleaned MAF. If it's still there, I'll clean it again and maybe change back to a paper filter and see if that helps.

From my experience K&N filters are not worth the nominal performance improvement over OEM paper filters. The paper filters keep the intake air much cleaner and no oil vapor coating concerns.

I almost hate piling on but unless you're running in real situations where K&N filters are truly useful they seem to be far more trouble than they're worth. If I'm racing in Baja or a SCORE event I'd have one---city streets and a few off-road excursions with regular checking and blowing out a good quality paper filter should do everything we need them to do.

Just IMHO mind you.

K&N air filters are an even worse idea in an offroad vehicle! I used to use them until I saw how filthy my intake tubes, throttle bodies, carburetors, and intake manifolds (on various vehicles) were, regardless of their service interval. It is said that they actually filter better after they get dirty and get some particulate stuck to them, but they let way too much particulate through for my comfort AND clog quickly. Dual layered oiled foam with an Outerwears prefilter for the win there. I've taken to just replacing paper filters at shorter than recommended intervals on my road going vehicles, it just works. An Outerwears over a K&N is definitely worth while if K&N is what you're going to stick with. You could try a lighter coating of oil at the next service to keep the MAF sensor cleaner, but too light will let more crud pass by that may have been caught otherwise.

Are you running any sort of tuner?

X2. Oil and dust are a bad combo. I ran an oiled filter for a while in my Bronco, and the caked-on mess it made had me quickly ditching it.

No tuner, although a 5 star is on the list.

Herb

Been Running a Green Filter since 1995. never ever had an issue.. I think you guys are using way way way to much oil on your K&N Filters as they shoudl not leave Any Oil on your MAF .. Clean your filters, Re-oil and follow the oil directions. on the Green filters its just a light mist... And the oil is Green to help you see that.. K&N oil is red.... Use a lot less. ! they are Great filters..

I had an issue with a factory over oiled KN on a performance Audi. It put a build up on the MAF sensor and as it heated it baked on. Took a lot of soaking to get it back to factory. Try the cleaner again and inspect the wires with a magnifying glass to make sure it is spotless.
