Hmmmm, 86 Scotty I may give this a shot. I'll look for some methods on testing the coils. Thanks for the info.
Jsweezy, I was getting a misfire under load (going up hill mainly). Thought my transmission might be slipping or something. Took it to the local shop, one of the coils was shot. They changed the coil and plug, 100% improvement. I am now getting the same issue about a month later.

OK thanks for the info, I don't think I have an issue but my van never ceases to amaze me.

Is this to prevent the plug from stripping out of the hole? I have a 4.6L in my Crown Vic, and am planning on changing plugs and coil packs sometime during my time off next month.

Or breaking, or whatever they do. Actually I think the older plug design had many different problems. What year is your Crown Vic?

I'll say it this way, I read a million horror stories online before I tried to change the plugs on my 5.4 (3 valve) Expedition. I was super paranoid, and in these cases when something is rumored to be trouble to get loose I use PB Blaster. Oddly, I didn't read ANY info online about anyone of the people who had plugs seize/break/whatever use a penetrant first. I'm not sure why. Maybe some did and didn't mention it. All I can say is the plugs in that v8 and the v10 I did soon after came right out with no trouble. I did use anti-seize putting the new ones in of course.

Is there a reason the fuel rails had to be right on top of the plugs and coils??

finished up the coils and plugs today. Took a while but runs a lot better. Now that I'm done, it wasnt as bad as I thought. But there were a few times I was regretting it.
Lesson learned. Electrical tape around plug socket and extension will save you a lot of head aches. If there is a next time, I would remove all the coils first. Just to get them totally out of the way. I was worried about getting plugs mixed up. Took the seats out just for better angles at getting to the back of the motor.
All in all, I did save a lot of money doing it my self.
The Pendelton Whiskey is definitely tasting a lot better tonight.

Glad to hear it. Did you have to remove the fuel rails?

I didn't remove the fuel rail. Unplugged a few of the connections that's about it.

Wow. I couldn't do it without removing the fuel rails on my 05 V10. Nice job.
