Stock Ford rims are too small for 285 BFGs.

Alan from Sportsmobile West was very kind to personally call me (and apparently everyone else who ordered their Sportsmobile with 285/75 BFG AT KO tires on the stock Ford 16x7 rims) to let me know that he has been contacted by BFGoodrich regarding the minimum recommended rim width for these tires. BFGoodrich recommends 16x7.5" as the minimum rim size.

Sure enough, their website confirms this: http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/specs...t-a-ko/44.html

Code:
Size Service Rim Width Section Width Diameter Tread Load
LT285/75R16/D 122R 7.5 - 9 11.4 on 8 32.8 17 3305@65PSI
LT285/75R16/E 126Q 7.5 - 9 11.3 on 8 33 15 3750@80PSI
I'm not sure if I'll personally be in a hurry to upgrade my rims -- as this tire/rim configuration has been pretty common, but this is just FYI...

Thanks for posting this Geoff. I was surprised when I read some people had that size tire on the stock Ford wheels. I know that was one of the reasons I changed out my wheels when I purchased new tires since they didn't have the adequate width.

Re: Stock Ford rims are too small for 285 BFGs.

It's common on 4x4's to use a narrower rim than recomended by the tire manufacturer. When you air down to go off road the narrow rim holds the bead on the tire better. It also pulls the weak side wall in so you don't rip the side wall as easy.
