Transfer Case Fluid
Anyone know what Amsoil fluid to put in the Atlas transfer case? The Atlas book sez to use Amsoil MTF but doesn't specify viscosity. Heber from SMB says they put in Amsoil MTG 75w-90. That's different then the MTF. He says other recommendations are Torco MTF, Castrol Syntec 5w-50, Valvoline 20w-50, and Mobil 1 synthetic 15w-50. These are all different viscosities then the Amsoil. What am I missing here???

My understanding is that all of these fluids work well in the Altlas transfer case. I've been using Mobil 1 15w-50 for the past 10k miles in mine. When I did the change I didn't have Amsoil MTF handy so I called Atlas and they recommended Mobil 1. I have no idea how these various fluids differ from each other.

I spoke with Atlas last summer about this. 5w30 MTF is the preferred fluid, but it sounds like the others will work just as well. Seemed strange to me, but hey a little flexibility is good. Right?

Another to consider (although I don't know what Atlas says about it) is Red Line 75W90 NS. The sportsmobile is the first thing I haven't been running Red Line in for quite some time. Think I'll give them a call as about to change my fluid.

Called. Yup, just as Scatter stated above. Advanced Adapter hasn't tried Red Line yet either. Don't think I'll offer up mine as the test subject, so Amsoil MTF it is.
What he emphasized several times is 2 quarts and no more (regardless of where it is on the sight tube). Not even an ounce more. Told me several stories of people that didn't believe him. If you put in more than two quarts, it will puke it out and take some extra with it. So, 2 quarts...period. He also suggested filling at the speedo location. Since we have a little more room under our SMBs, might be that much easier, but there you go. That speedo cap is pretty easy access. Easier than anything I've ever had prior.

Dminimis -
Where is the speedo cap? Where I think it is (on the side of the output extension) looks to be a pressed in cap. There is a bolt in the middle of the rear of the housing that looks to hold in a round cap with a flat on one side. When I remove the bolt, it appears to give direct access into the inside of the housing, but not sure how to take the cap out with the flat on one side. I could always just squirt it into the bolt hole I guess.
Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks -
Phil

The install process is to install, fill with exactly 2 quarts and then mark your sight tube. I usually fill from the top fitting of the sight tube as on my Jeep Atlas the speedo fill trick didn't seem to work (the fluid pooled in the speedo housing but never went into the Tcase). YMMV, I was probably doing something stupid as it was my first Atlas experience.

Re: Transfer Case Fluid
I need to change my Atlas fluid before heading out today. Just couldn't buy into the extremely different weights listed in my manual (motor oil to gear lube). Called them and the guy I spoke with felt that the motor oil weights listed are too light. Thank you! Good 75w-90 GL4 gear lube is what is now apparently recommended. He likes the Valvoline syn, but as long as its 75w-90 GL4, you'll be good.
Also, so its here when I need it, the nut (for rear seal replacement) is 150 ft/lbs. Yes, rear seal is starting to leak.
