Re: What Tools For My Ford 6.0 EB50

I knew there was a reason when I purchased the 4x4 trailer... always nice to have a spare engine.

Re: What Tools For My Ford 6.0 EB50

I've already got one installed with a shift on the fly auxiliary switch. I only have to use it a couple of times a month though so I'm not sure if it was worth the investment....

Re: What Tools For My Ford 6.0 EB50

I already have a complete set of 2008 Workshop Manuals.

Just suggestions on hand tools that you all carry and sockets specific to 6.0 engine, belts, etc.

Re: What Tools For My Ford 6.0 EB50

On the 6.0, I actually can't think of any special tools that are absolutely necessary for common repairs. Just a typical metric wrench and socket set, maybe some speed wrenches (ratcheting box wrenches), and a assortment of extension and U-joints. A set of "wobblies" (CV-joint sockets) is super nice but not necessary.

Of you end-wrenches, carry a spare set of cheap ones, that you would not mind cutting with a hacksaw. There's a few spots where its useful to cut one down to fit.

There's a few spots where you are supposed to use a male hex-driver, but at least here those are kinda expensive since in larger sizes, so I make them using a bolt and jam-nut, they a regular socket fits.

A good penetrating oil is a must.

X2 on AutoEngenuity. There's some conditions you won't be able to properly diagnose with a cheap scanner, and having full telematics could allow you to limp out while reducing the chance of more damage. And, it'll allow you to adjust for tire size changes without paying Ford.

At the risk of sounding like a Brit, that is simply brilliant!

Re: What Tools For My Ford 6.0 EB50

I should have clarified: you need a double jam-nut on your bolt to make a hex driver. Like so:

Yes, I've been guilty of this trick a few times as well........you need to really jam those nuts together though.......

Tell us more about the auto-engenuity....it will allow me to dial in my speedo?

Re: What Tools For My Ford 6.0 EB50

Auto Engenuity is about as close to Ford IDS as you can get without paying Ford. You can select multiple data streams to monitor in numeric or graph format, plus theres built-in diagnostic tests. You cannot however load firmware updates. You still need Ford IDS with subscription to do that.

You can adjust tire sizes on the newer vans (TorqueShift at least), but it does not fully support that for the 4R100 or older. You buy diagnostics packages by brand, so if you buy it for your Ford van, it'll work on most any other Ford including Aston Martins, Land Rovers, Jaguars, and Mazdas depending on year.

Re: What Tools For My Ford 6.0 EB50

The 5.4L has the 4R75 in the vans (only cutaways got the option of the TorqueShift). I have no idea if tire size changes are supported for the 4-speed. I suspect yes, since the vehicle architecture is all the same, but I'm not certain. And, I don't know for sure how much it allows. There may be a Rev/mile range that it will restrict changes too.

To be honest, I haven't played with AE on many Fords besides the 6.0, since that was by far the majority of Fords I was working on. They made up at least 90% of my Ford business. Maybe more. Some weeks 6.0s made up 75% of total shop volume. Maybe somebody else on here has played around more on the gassers?
