Re: When to Change Engine Coolant?
As far as I know, there are only two readily available coolants that meets Ford's specs:
Ford Gold Coolant
Xerex G05 Coolant
I'd be leary of trying a coolant that isn't specifically listed for this engine. There are too many different types of coolants, and mixing even a minute amount of the incompatible ones may cause enough material to settle out to plug the the EGR/Oil cooler passages.

Re: When to Change Engine Coolant?
I had FORD flush and refill to maintain a relationship for warranty issue's that might arise down the road . And I have never found any difference with other brands of anti freeze in spite of much touted claims by the manufacture's . I know that for years that Prestone made both GM and Ford's Coolants under a private label agreement .

Re: When to Change Engine Coolant?
Greggde,
That is probably true for gas engines. But, diesels have another set of requirements and you can actually destroy the engine by using the wrong coolant.

I had Hubert switch me to the Amsoil coolant at 5k miles. Replaced it at 35k and will do so again every 20k miles.

If you have to change it that often, what is the advantage of the Amsoil coolant?

Mostly peace of mind. Amsoil products have a good reputation, but I can't give specifics on why they are 'better' than alternatives. I change all of my fluids often in hope of keeping my PSD out of the shop.

Re: When to Change Engine Coolant?
I am fairly sure the Amsoil probably costs more. Since it costs more it must be a much better product. You know, if if it costs twice as much it must be twice as good. And specially if you also change it twice as often.

Whatever floats your boat. "Which is best" threads tend to be a bit subjective, especially when the topic is engine fluids.

Re: When to Change Engine Coolant?
What?!? "Which is best" threads are the best kind of threads. Out of all the threads, "Which is best" are the only ones that really bring out people's posts like no other thread. They generate three times the post count as you're likely to post three times as much, so they must be the best!
