In my opinion the Inreach Explorer is the best satellite communication product out there right now for the money.
It runs off the Iridium network so it works everywhere - and is basically like taking an Iridium sat phone and a handheld GPS and smashing them together (minus voice - which makes it affordable). We have been able to put waypoints and routes in before we hit the road (works well for forest service roads with lots of intersections) and follow the GPS to camp. Then when we get there my family friends can see where we are at all times on the website. It offers 2-way global SOS (with message delivery notification so i can know my SOS has been recieved) and 2-way text/email - I can even update my facebook from anywhere haha.
As opposed to the SPOT phone which requires a 12 month contract.... The inreach devices are month-to-month/NO contract for the service.
