Old price lists are interesting but their prices aren't the screaming deals they appear to be. A dollar was worth a lot more in those days. $410 had the purchasing power of $3,415 today. I can't find a US version for the VW, but pop tops for VW vans in the UK and Europe were running from about £2,500-£5,500 (installed) in 2020 - 2021:
