We drive all over the west and have never had an issue finding the B5 diesel. We were in Quartzite AZ last week and the Pilot station pump sticker stated “anywhere from 5 to 20%”, we simply went down the road and found what we needed.
There are also some truck stops on I5 with B20, the first clue is the lower price. Again, never a problem finding what we need.
Always look for and read the sticker on the pump. The information is there.

Fitz,
I agree, always been able to find good diesel for our VW TDI, so far it hasn't been an issue. Definitely not an issue in British Columbia. Don't know about Alaska, where we intend to spend a few summers.

Can I ask maybe a stupid question? I’ve also seen B20 at a Pilot Station and I also drove on and won’t go to Pilot again. What I look for is ultra low sulfur Diesel #2. Is that good diesel? I’ve never seen the label B5?

I believe you're good to go. I've used both Diesel #2 and B2-B5 fuel. At most pump stations it's diesel #2 and if it isn't specifically labeled it isn't biofuel. The attached is an example.

I think what this thread is stating there seems to be a trend towards more biofuel, including up to B20. This is bad news for us (B5 is fine but I haven't even used that in our TDI) unless on a long drive and I was too lazy to find another pump).
But so far it hasn't been an issue form what I've seen at stations.

That certainly isn't the case in the Midwest. There are no labels for B20. You never know what you are getting. I don't fill up in Minnesota, Iowa or Illinois unless it is an emergency because it is probably B20 (the corn farmers rule these states).

FTC pump labeling requirements:
B1-B5, no pump label required
B6-B20, pump label required, some states require a specific label, in my experience I have seen labels stating the range is between 5 and 20%
B20+, pump label required, states that the blend contains more than 20%
B100, pump label required if a retail sale, in my experience the first clue from the side of the road is the lower price

Fitz, good info, thanks. My assumption has been that if there is biodiesel available at a station it is a separate pump and separate price listing as well. In Washington I've very rarely seen anything but #2 diesel. For instance, in Bellingham WA there is only one truck stop that I've seen that has biodiesel available and the pump is clearly labeled as biodiesel, separate from the #2 station, even though the % is not listed(B2, B5, B20, etc).
Is this assumption correct from your experience?
