Exactly, with the bend allowing a spare tire of reasonable size.

IDEA : storage space utilizing OEM step bumper.

narrow metal box open at the top
attached on one side to frame horns other side to the step bumper.

OEM plastic tread plate removed and replaced with wider metal tread plate
that also acts as the top for the metal box with integrated hinged lid.

ALSO : if swing arms are desired , swing arm spindles / receptacles can be
placed at the outermost edges of the metal box. (end caps)

That's cool as heck!
Adds hugely-practical actual additional storage....awesome......
I'd buy (or build?) one of those for my van for sure.....

Love how it extends the effective bumper surface rearward, such that there's finally some actual rear-impact protection to the spare tire. And you get some adequately-sized-and-functional "standing platform" out of it behind the rear doors.

VERY COOL!!!

This might be my favorite idea so far here.

Elegantly simple....but super useful in a ton of ways, and easily produced.
And it re-uses the existing bumper.......love it love it love it

Edit: a similar full-width "sandwiched storage box" would look great stacked behind the front bumper too. This adds so much practical storage without any complex/difficult engineering (or styling!), it's a really great idea man.

Thank you for the compliment.

I'm glad you like it.

I think if you build the metal box with swing arms in mind you can reinforce the box accordingly.

and if the swing arm were built straight / symmetrical it could be used as right or left.

also the wider platform of the bumper can be used as a rest for the heavy weight of the spare tire , and effectively reduce the stress at the swing arm attachment point and aid in vibration reduction.

" simple , useful , and easily produced."

.......... My thoughts exactly .

Hey this thread seemed long in the tooth for an update......or, rather, for a......
*Bump*
(heh, bumper thread....bump.....bump......)

Anyway:
Some brief behind-the-scenes update:

Boywonder and I have had some semi-frequent back-and-forth conversations going pretty continuously since this kicked off. For a couple of the chats, I threw some super-fast sketches together (literally 5-minute doodles) to better be able to discuss stuff. But me being a guy who sketches/designs automotive stuff for a living, I didn't want to show any of these quick-and-dirty thumbnail sketches....only ultra-finished/polished stuff, once I had a chance to better refine them.....

But then I figured screw it.
Creating anything truly new is a messy process.
I wouldn't trust anyone who swears otherwise.

And you guys should get an unfiltered look at *just how messy things "look in the kitchen"* before they get all sorted out and refined into a beautiful finished product.

So without further yammering --- I submit the following two rough doodles:

1) Sketch around the original idea of drop-down brushguard bumper.
* This one positions its pivot point low, such that the brushguard would indeed act as a standing platform when swung forward 90 degrees.
* Original idea was for a pivot placed up higher, such that the flipped-down brushguard would be positioned at grille height (top of bumper) so that it could function as a platform for gear/bikes/etc.

2) Sketch inspired by JackTuppVan's rear bumper storage idea.
* This one would be styled to work with a "shorty" slim-line custom bumper "overcap" that could be used stand-alone as well. (And could incorporate custom light fittings, recovery hooks, etc.)

Nice doodles! I'm impressed with the Ideas. The 2-piece rear is genius. The rear storage module would also have swing arms? Also could be offered in different sizes (more or less storage).
Cheers
Darryl

excellent!.........at some point we need to sort and group ideas and start to combine and down select.....

...and mountainbikeroamer can further refine some ideas......and a few sketches to show everyone how it's done.....
