Once the tape was pulled up it was apparent that this was going need substantial repair. The tape residue line can be seen in the pics. There are a few blister spots on the Driver side of the van near the Aluminess ladder. There is an area at the lower Driver to Fender area that shows surface discoloration and rust.

Interior inspection shows all interior areas and cabinets are in good condition. There are no signs of water leaks on any of the interior surfaces or upholstery from the roof holes.

• THE REST OF THE STORY
This rig was going to be this family’s retirement rig with plans to keep it for a very long time. They purchased this rig about two years ago.

The 7.3 engine runs great, the John Woods transmission was installed (by prior owner) 45,000 miles ago, all great. Shows well cared for. No tears, cabinets are in excellent condition. Steering is tight. NEW upgrades- tires, wheels, NEWFull Floater 4,10 LSD rear axle, rear Deaver springs, NEWFOX shocks, NEW brakes all round including Big Brake Fronts, etc. A very well equipped, very sharp looking, and reliable rig.

After all these upgrades and update efforts, the owner decided to address a couple of small rust spots on the roof where, what he has come to learn, is the typical pop top rub the paint issue. He pulled up the black hard rubber protective tape and found the horrible nightmare of rust through in more than one location. He has not been able to find a shop local comfortable with doing the repairs with a pop top present. Reluctantly, with his very demanding work, and family life, there is no time for them to get this repaired. At this point he and his wife decided to let this go. So, with full disclosure, it is up for sale and looking for a buyer who can see the opportunity to get the roof spots repaired on this otherwise very solid rig.

WHAT IS NEEDED:
A buyer who wants:
*A very, very well equipped 7.3 genuine Sportsmobile Quigley 4x4 EB50
*An excellent running rig with tons of updates and upgrades
*AND has resources to have the roof properly repaired to their satisfaction.

Clearly, the roof needs to be properly repaired. Likely, the pop top does not have to come off but the canvas needs to be detached at the bottom so the rust can be dealt with. Then apply Raptor or Rhino lining on the repaired roof.

The van has been and is currently stored in a garage so there is no chance of rain finding its way into the interior.

Sway bar bushings could be upgraded to polyurethane bushings.
Remount awning after roof repairs
Power Driver seat is not functioning, needs troubleshooting.
EVERYTHING ELSE IS DONE.

Interested Parties:
The seller has asked me to help him with this sale and wants the buyer to know what they are getting - GOOD and BAD. I will field all initial inquiries to help answer questions and pass on serious/qualified parties to him.

I have not personally seen the vehicle but have conducted multiple video calls/walk throughs and asked every question I would ask if I were buying it as a very knowledgeable buyer. I have three vans now, otherwise this would be a consideration due to ALL of the other mileage related issues having been addressed.

Somewhere on the forum is a thread from a guy who did this repair himself. I think he was in Los Gatos or Campbell, CA. I feel like I bookmarked it but so far I can’t find it. If I do I will post it.

This is a deal... the repair doesn't even have to be pretty... nobody will ever see it!

I'd jump on this in a heartbeat if I could manage to get laid off from work so I had some time.

Great deal!! Somebody could buy and remove the penthouse top, sell the penthouse top, and replace with a Tuffport topper that sits on the drip rails. Wasatch Overland in UT will do that for $6k. Sell the top for close to that and you are out the door under $50k for a really nice 7.3L.

Yes All - this is a solid opportunity. I am guessing the first person to actually go see it and drive it will buy it. It has so much positive going for it.

Keep the feedback / ideas coming.

Yes, TufPort top was one of the ideas we discussed. They cut out the roof all the way to the beginning of the gutter, so ye, that would greatly reduce much of the repair. The added benefit is the storage area that is added to the interior of the fixed top.

The offset to the cost of the TufPort, as mentioned, would be the sale of the Pop Top AND the Aluminess rack. Definitely a major offset to the Tufport add.

Or, get the roof fixed and retain the benefits of the pop top.

Either way, I agree the total invested would be ~ $50k.

Garage
My body guy fixed mine which looked worse than this. He is Portland and does all the Van specialties work. Someone could buy and have a great cross country trip to the NW. It's a couple thousand to fix it right. The work done makes this a reliable machine for a long time.

Tuff port tops are $7k maybe more now. Fiberine 20" are about $5-$6K. Resale on pop tops are$2500 -$4000 just went thru this scenario no more than 4 months ago.
