For that much money, I would just drive it in reverse - that way the wheel would be on the right side... I think.

Boywonder,
Apparently they move the engine across to the left about 1.5 inches. Which intriques me as well! As they completely reverse steering box etc.

G'day.
Dash is completely rebuilt, new wiring harness built, airconditiong ducting, instrument panel, engine bay rebuild, steering column & power steering to right hand side. Eagle Automotive, Plymouth, make new right hand drive dashes & wiring harness's for Ford Trucks & Mustang and sell them worldwide to UK, Japan, China. Very complex.
Cheers.

Just out of curiosity, why do the conversion to RHD at all? Is it required by law?

Hi,
Yes it's the law.
Imagine an island country the size of the continental U.S. with less than one tenth the population spread out largely down the coast of one side. No need for multi lane interstate or autobahn roads to link them together. The big cities have them, but they end at the outskirts, essentially. Travel between towns is necessary, but the volumes just don't justify multiple lanes everywhere. Try passing a 3 trailer road train on a two lane road with left hand drive. Think about it. Starting from the left side of the road. Better have a licensed passenger as a spotter.
Then try right hand turns on multi lane city streets. That's the equivalent of our lefts. You can't peek around the guy turning right coming at you in the opposite direction.
Your delivery van built LHD opens its side door into traffic.
It's not physically joined to any other place so you don't have left hand drive cars mixing with the locals like Britain got when the channel tunnel opened.
The government likes to keep jobs on this island so a flood of left hand cars from the rest of the world isn't going to help what was a tiny auto industry.
The people of the country have a good bit of pride at being different so they accept mandatory RHD for the few private imports brought in.
And mostly because it's a foreign country. Full of foreigners that do things differently. Great!
And yes one country did go from RHD to LHD. Name it without google? Changed over in September 1967. Maybe Australia should have too. Probably too late now.
Regards,
Gavin
