What a Goof!

So, yesterday, I'm heading home, to have a friend pick me up in order to drive me to pick up my van. While driving home I saw a green Econoline van towing a trailer pull into a local campground. Later, after picking up my van, I pulled into the campground to see if that van was still around.

Not sure how I missed this thread! Too much travel, too much other stuff ... but found out about it in person from REF/ Rick and company.

Was cool to see his amazing build in person and gain some insight on some front end fixes ... and my first meet-up with a forum member.

Welcome to Alaska and others that will be joining them this summer. I'm local if you run into any issues.

The last couple days have been interesting. Yesterday I drove through a Forrest fire, on both sides of the highway, in a torrential rain and lightning storm. Unfortunately, it probably wasn't enough to extinguish the fire because it's deep in the muskeg. The smoke was intense, but I passed through the fire zone and the worst of the smoke in about twenty minutes. Then, after crossing the border, the road really went to hell with miles of pot holes and frost heaves. South of Tok, there were miles of road construction with dozens of pieces of heavy equipment and pilot cars. A flagged told me they had just finished several miles of repairs when the last heat wave appeared. He said they had never had heat like that, and it melted all the repairs before the big rigs came along and tore it all up again, so it all has to be re done. Fuel in Alaska is way cheaper than anywhere in BC or the Yukon where I've seen it over $6/gal. I paid $3.25 in Tok. Anyway, it's been a great trip so far and it's just getting started.

Who's going to Alaska this summer?

Good to meet up with you Bob.....thanks for making the effort to track us down. Jeff, our paths will merge one of these days, sounds like you’re finding some cool things to occupy your time.
To pick up where I left off.....

We chatted while waiting in line a bit, he turned out to be a long time Yukon gold miner, had all the stories, he later showed up at our campsite with some of his bounty, pretty big nuggets!

That’s him on the right along with another RVer we had met along the way. Yes, that’s a nugget hanging around his neck, a character to say the least!

BTW-the ferry can only take 1 large rig at a time, along with several cars and bikes and any on foot, so if you were in a car or van, you wouldn’t have had to wait in the big rig or RV line. It was all about timing, there was not a long line when we went over the day before and only had to wait maybe 15-20 min or 2/3 ferry crossings before being loaded up because of our size towing the camper. It’s just that time of year when all the groups and caravans of RV’s are heading up to AK at the same time.

We are finally spending a few days relaxing on the shores of Resurrection bay in Seward Ak. Ref and his family are off on a wildlife tour while Mrs A/T and I hold down the fort. It's been way too hot, but yesterday, within a 10 minute period, the wind changed direction and the temp dropped 10 degrees. It's now quite pleasant. Next week, I'll be making plans to begin heading South, but have no idea of the route yet.

You didn't travel to Alaska to camp in a parking lot, did you?

Well, we did last year. The Fairbanks Safeway was a good overnight for us :-) Got up and walked 20 feet to Hardee’s for breakfast.
