Re: Jacks/Airbag, Recovery Gear and Tire kits
What is the stroke on that? It looks like the scissor jack from my hatchback with a motor... useful but not stable sideways.

Re: Jacks/Airbag, Recovery Gear and Tire kits
Web site says 13". Its about as stable as any jack and more than most scissor versions. Especially as it has a wide jack point that would permit the use of the axle as a more ideal jack point (rear) given the height that the chassis rail is above the ground.

Re: Jacks/Airbag, Recovery Gear and Tire kits
I was thinking sideways, if the complaint is a non-level surface, I wouldn't want a scissor jack over a bottle jack even if you had to make a basket for the top.

True enough. But look at the width of this one - much better than your average OEM scissor variety.

Re: Jacks/Airbag, Recovery Gear and Tire kits
On the subject of hi-lift jacks, this 12" x 15" off road base seemed like a good idea so I picked one up at SMB Fresno. Also available online: http://www.amazon.com/Hi-Lift-Jack-O.../dp/B00042KJQ4

Does the base provide a significant advantage over a piece of 2x6?

Won't get thrown in the fire by accident.

Re: Jacks/Airbag, Recovery Gear and Tire kits
The Hi Lift jack base does have a recessed area the same size as the base=plate of the Hi- Lift, providing some lateral resistance to the jack sliding off the base.

Re: Jacks/Airbag, Recovery Gear and Tire kits
Which is particularly valuable when lifting at the side of the highway whch always seems to slope in the wrong direction.
But I have a question: how do you use one of these to change a tire. There is no obvious way to lift the frame that is accessible to the jack? I understand their use to raise wheel that may have dug in using lifting straps on the wheel. But you cannot lift the wheel you are intending to replace unless you also carry a jackstand?
