Actually the switch is not meant to leave them down, but UP when off roading. Allows one to open the door while moving--for spotting purposes--without having the step hit something immovable.

Rock Slide has been selling these step sliders on Jeeps for a few years. I understand they upgraded early units for no charge. They go out of their way to take care of their customers.

Re: Rock Slide Retractable Steps

I've never seen this style of slider that bolts to the rockers. Wouldn't this really tweak your sheet metal if you slid off a rock and landed on it seeing as how we're running 9000+ lb vans? I'm used to sliders being welded directly to the frame, although with these vans the sliders would be cantilevered a lot since the frame is set in pretty far. I'm in the midst of deciding how I'm going to approach this issue in my build.

Nobody sane should be rocksliding a 11,000lb $100,000 van anyway. I think by the time you made them strong enough over the wheelbase they would impair the van anyway. Just my theory, I abuse the heck out of rock rails on my Jeeps, on the van- they're tinfoil used to get in and out.

Re: Rock Slide Retractable Steps

I don't consider these rails "rock sliding rails" and don't plan to use them is that manner. They're heavy duty steps. But if I do slide off a rock or trail (which has happened to me) I'll feel better that a slight blow to them will not damage them and the winching and recovery procedure will be easier. Plus hopefully the body will not be damaged. I saw what happens to the SMB type step when someone misjudged a minor dip. The SMB type rails bent like a feather in the wind. Do you need to spend 2800 bucks for a heavy duty step? Nope. But I was injured at work and getting in and out of my van was killing me. AMP steps were too wimpy for me.

I think those chrome style tubular steps bolted to the frame would be a good choice if you don't need lower steps.

Re: Rock Slide Retractable Steps

Think I am taking the plunge on these.

Quick call to them just now eased my concerns about the Rock Damage protection they offer. They stated they are meant for that with the added benefit of the step. Also they stated they could work around my external propane setup.

Saw a couple pairs at the Expo and was impressed by the build quality.

Looking forward to the trip just trying to find the time....

Thanks for all the info from all on this thread.

Re: Rock Slide Retractable Steps

Brent, the propane door solution seems to be turning it upside down so if you don't like the way that looks you'll have to find a different solution. Having it upside down can be annoying but livable; looks is another issue but it isn't that bad. I'm happy with them and so are my arms and knees.

Re: Rock Slide Retractable Steps

Do you have an image of what that looks like or is it in your gallery?
