Curious about this auburn LS locker and why it would be a first choice especially from carringb. I know you tow retired train engines worth of weight so this must be tough. I just went to tighten my ebrake and pulled the discs per recommendation which led to a full rebuild of my rear end including brakes. Turns out I have an open diff with pretty good wear. While I have had no issues going to the mountain on mostly unplowed roads (st Helens and Adams) I’d feel better with a LSD. The tru trac was my choice assuming I can slide in 35 spline axles but then I saw this ected auburn. Anyone have any experience?

I like the concept of the Auburn ECTED (Now called the Select-A-Loc), because Limited Slip is great for low traction roads (snow, muddy forest service roads etc) but has the ability to lockup fully. Even a TruTrac would be unable to send enough torque to the other side if one side has no traction, like if a tire is in the air.

I've never used one though. I think it may be the eLSD option in the newer Expeditions. One complaint I have read is that you have to lock it before you get a lot of wheel-spin, otherwise it will over-heat then the PCM with disable to the locker function. Of course, if you install one into you van you wouldn't have any sort of thermal protection feature like that.

I ended up with the Trutrac and like lots of other folks, I'm quite happy with it, even in snow and ice. Additionally, if one tire is off the ground, a light application of the brake pedal will transfer torque adequately.

This is what I ordered. I made what I think is a small assumption that the 35 spline axles will slide in and I bought the cut to length ones. I’ve seen it done by many so hopefully this all goes without a hitch. Drivetrain is basically all new after this last piece. Loving the new huge brakes and hydro up front.

Funny story for you Jeff:
I'm at a friend's garage, Charlie, whom I had known for 20yrs. We are mid-week, afterwork "benchracing" (that's drinking beer and pretending to work on a racecar, I'm sure you're familiar Jeff).


Up walks one of Charlie's neighbors. A character to be sure, nice enough, knows enough about performance cars to be dangerous, but always good for a laugh or two.



"Hey Charlie, that thing got an unlimited slip rear end in it?" pointing to Charlie's and his son's Grand American Modified dirt stock car, up on jack stands. Before Charlie can answer, the neighbor offers up "You know, you have to put whale sperm in the oil to make 'em work"



Charlie, now chuckling, me snorting and splitting beer through my nose

"I think it's Limited Slip..." more snickering "and it's an additive that they say contains sperm whale oil "


I gather it up, and with a straight face I add

"Unless the clutch plates are worn out, then it truly IS unlimited slip, in which case, some sticky whale sperm couldn't hurt. Problem is getting it, can you imagine? I understand it's only available by the 5 gallon pail"



Now Charlie spits beer through his nose, symbolically points to the open door "Out! get_out!" while laughing hysterically

At least with a bull, you can lock them in a squeeze chute before uhh....."obtaining" said sperm.
