Re: TIRE CHOICE

Had a set of Goodyear Wrangler Dura Tracs installed just before the big snow here in Colorado about a week and a half ago. Exceptional traction in the white and icy stuff and surprisingly good dry performance, too. I was replacing the Nitto Terra Grapplers. I'll let you all know how they fare.

Size: 285/75/16 load range "E" inflated to 65psi (for now).

Vehicle: 2005 Ford E350 SMB 4x4, EB50, 6.0 diesel

Now if I could ever figure out how to share some pics......

Re: TIRE CHOICE

Four Wheeler magazine did a test on mud terrain tires and I was surprised at the results. They tried to test as an all around tire for street and off road use. The test keyed on off road mud terrain more than sand or hard rock, but also for durability and sound on pavement as well. Most tested were D rated tires on light weight vehicles but I was still surprised with the end results.
10th . Maxxis M8060 Trepador.
9th . Pro Comp Xtreme Mud Terrain.
8th . BFG Mud Terrain T/A KM2.
7th . Interco Super Swamper TrXus.
6th . Pit Bull Rocker LT Radial.
5th . Yokohama Geolander M/T.
4th . Nitto Trail Grappler M/T.
3rd . Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ.
2nd . Goodyear Wrangler MT/R Kevlar.
1st place . Hankook Dynapro MT.

I’m really looking at the Goodyear’s because of the Kevlar and it was rated high on durability and overall strength especially on the sidewall. I didn’t check which companies offer an E rated tire. Interesting article anyway.

No Toyo Open Country MT? I guess they are similar to the nitto trail grappler MT?

TIRE CHOICE

Also no Cooper. I am sticking with our E rated (3800lbs) STTs and their three ply side walls.

Re: TIRE CHOICE

Nice to see the Goodyears rate highly. I have enjoyed mine on pavement; off payment in Moab, JTree, and around Oregon; in Oregon coast rain; and even in a little snow and ice. E-rated, 305/70R-16, 12,000 miles and no complaints.

Which goodyear tire are you using?

I have been very pleased with the wrangler silent armors. Very tough tire. But they are only available in limited sizes with an E load rating.

I'd like to get 17" wheels and the silent armors are not going to work in that size.
Thanks
R

Re: TIRE CHOICE

I have the Wrangler MT/R Kevlar, same as #2 on the list above. I lost a couple of small chunks (<1/8") out of two tread blocks on the jagged granite in JTree/Berdoo Canyon, but no sandstone problems in Moab. They were new on the van when I bought it, so I haven't looked into other size options.

Same company but not the same tires. Toyo probably didn't all around perform in the top 10.

I'm more surprised by the Interco, I think of the Super Swampers as not great on the street.
