I will be up that way Sunday or Monday to do some exploring so if you need any help with anything let me know.

Heh... Was just thinking that. I'll keep it if there's not a significant core charge.

Really great to see everyone jumping in to help. I will be up in Idaho looking for potential retirement properties at the end of next month. Good to know which resources are available.

Interesting read when you consider what transfer case fluid to use. May want to discuss with your mechanic:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...r-xl-12-a.html
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...e-blew-up.html
BTW, I have a BW1356 in both my Salem Kroeger 4x4 van and in my Bronco and I will use either Mercon or XL-12 transfer case fluid (I've bought it before, but I don't know if it is still available.)

I don't know a whole lot about those cases, but seems it would be better to replace the bearing that's gone bad vs the entire case. that way if there were other issues they could be taken care of while apart rather than hoping for the best with a used unit.

You are correct. I did not catch what year the van was but the early 2000ish used the 1356 because of the Quigley adapter used on the 2wd factory transmission. The tail shaft housing was removed and the adapter to a 1356 pushed the case further back requiring the replacement or modification of the fuel tank. I believe they did this so Ford would warranty the transmission under contract should anything happen to the transmission. When I did my conversion I was going to put the massive 271. It was too big. I had the replacement fuel tank but the 271 was even longer. I settled for the 1356 of which I have a spare one in the garage. Although the 1356 is quite strong for it's size I feel it is somewhat under sized for my application. My intent is once my tranny goes find a 4x4 4r100 built it and put my other spare t-case an NP 205 behind it and sell the Quigley adapter and 2 t-cases.

The biggest issue with them is the oil pump bracket that wears a groove in the case eventually allowing the pump to spin and stop pumping. It's an easy fix, with several Utube videos on the process. The other big issue is the planetary gear set has non serviceable thrust washers, and when they wear past the limit (about .060in end play as I remember) they tend to pop out of 4low. Fortunately, there is an updated part that's much better. Throw in a set a bearings, and likely it will be like new for many years to come. Otherwise, there are plenty of rebuilt units available, I'd just want to make sure they used the updated planetary set. Best of luck

Don't forget the shift fork facings. The little plastic parts disintegrate from heat and oil over time. This can cause limited throw of the slide collar gear and eventually tapper the gear so it kicks out of gear under a load! Happened to me on a Jeep 231 !
