webbmac - I believe those tube supports are standard now on the manual PH. At least they were on our 2007 build.

No one said anything about them when we had penthouse installed in 2009. Did not know they existed.

That maybe a difference between Indiana and Fresno.

Re: Loaded Roof Rack on Pop Top

Those supports where not recommended for me at the Fresno Factory because of the possible large amount of weight that I'd like to have on the roof while it is up. They actually recommended I do the 2x4 option and not purchase these drop down legs from them.

Standard on manual pop top from SMB West in 2010 too.

The only reason I can see SMB Indiana saying use 2x4s is if they can't give you something that will hold the weight you want. So basically you're on your own and they can say whatever they want. However, if I were them I'd cover my ass and put the standard metal tubes in with the written weight limit that comes with them and then tell you what you can do to work around this weight limit.

Loaded Roof Rack on Pop Top

An alternative to 2x4 might be wooden closet rods. They come in 1-1/4" and 1-1/2" diameters and look much nicer.

Re: Loaded Roof Rack on Pop Top

How tall are the corner supports people have made/SMB has? I need to get something sorted in the next few days and figured a height to start with will give me better options when I head to the hardware store.

Re: Loaded Roof Rack on Pop Top

Your best bet is to raise the top and measure. Measure each corner!
Mine varies about 1" front to back and about 1/2" side to side in the rear.

When I cut the 2x2 sticks for mine I just measured the front right corner and
cut 4. Luckily that corner was the longest and the others just needed a little trim.

Re: Loaded Roof Rack on Pop Top

Used 1" aluminum tubing with rubber end caps like the ones on the end of a cane. Very light and very strong. Got it all at OSH.
