Re: new around here
I'm actually down in San Francisco, but a friend who lives in Chico took his wife for a date to Pick n Pull, saw the van and called me.

new around here
Hi;
Thanks for the clarification on the canvas details. Last question is which SMB factory supplied the new canvas ready-to-install?
Regards
Gavin

Fresno, but they all purchase from the same supplier who makes them all.

Re: new around here
I would think you could put the PH up and between the V in the support and the canvas not being attached slide it on.
Still I can totally see it being easier to pull the PH fiberglass, flip it and screw down following whatever indication is left on that half, as opposed to putting it together fighting gravity.
Once that's done I would put it back and then guess- by guess I mean cut your frame, clip things in place until it looks right and maybe experiment with putting the top up and down. There has got to be some leeway, and it's pretty much vertical when you're finished, possibly slightly larger than the upper portion.
Baring better measurements, I'd guess and just make sure your attachment is inside the fiberglass profile when closed- which I'd guess if you just kind of follow the canvas shape it should be.
EDIT: went through old projects and pulled random pictures that may or may not help

So I went for it last weekend.. Pulled the top so it was easier to get the top attached straight etc. Then put it back on, and kind of screwed it down where it lay.. Did ok, the two back corners are not exactly the same, but close enough.. Still gotta throw some more screws down, clean the whole thing up a bit, and do some re-upholstery work.. But it's getting there.

My only learning is.. attach the top totally with just the wood and no butyl. Then go back and unscrew sections and add a shit ton of butyl. It's nasty sticky crap and it would be a heck of a lot easier to line the top up without it.. I didn't do it this way. Oops.

Re: new around here
Oh yeah, and be careful installing the springs. They need a lot of torque.. I used normal ratcheting tiedowns and it was a bit sketchy. I'd recommend a come-along or automotive tiedown or something more stout.
At one point I was cranking down on the tiedown, and noticed a small fray across 1/3 of the strap. Pointed it out to my friend.. couple more cranks and 15 more seconds, pointed it out again and it was more than 1/2 of the strap and growing. We aborted quickly and started over with new tiedown.
Careful!
