Re: SMB Steering Stabilizer

Very very interesting,
I have had some of the disabled drivers comment on having the wheel wrenched from their hands (they use a spinner knob) and I have been looking into a "low effort" steering setup that increases the power steering assist.
I hadn't thought about adding steering dampening. Great post and I might just have to steal your design if that is cool.

Re: SMB Steering Stabilizer

You did a great job ! very clean , and I know that you will notice a great difference in handling particularly when you are in the Marbles and Rutted Soft stuff . I think that I mentioned in an earlier post about my wife driving the Van for the first time and grabbing an 18" driver side roadside berm and being slammed into the driver side window because she was gripping the wheel to tightly . She had driven all of our other Vans with regularity and was shocked when this occurred on the way into Laurel Lakes as I had dual stabilization on all of our previous 4X4's , bless her heart she apologized for gripping the wheel so tightly , saying that she didn't want to wreck anything .

Re: SMB Steering Stabilizer

That setup is way better than my Skyjacker kit. Scatter turned me on to the skyjacker kit and I was worried it wouldn't fit because he has the Deaver spring packs but it did work out fine. I just had to reverse the shocks for clearance. The brackets that come with the Skyjacker kit are fairly simple and not near as stout as what Phil built....nice job! I would suspect the shocks are better quality as well. I also would be interested in a set of brackets. Here is the link to the SkyJacker thread:

Re: SMB Steering Stabilizer

I think everyone also needs to recognize that steering stabilizers are also really good at hiding problems, including very serious steering problems. If you have a stabilizer, or are installing a stabilizer, take the time to inspect your steering system periodically.
