Toaster Oven
Has anyone used a toaster oven in place of a microwave? Can you run it off the generator or inverter? Seems like I read somewhere that coiled heating appliances have special requirements, but I'm hoping there's a workaround.
Thanks,

You can run it off an inverter, no problem. As long as the inverter puts out enough power obviously. I think the same inverter than runs the microwave in the SMB should be plenty. They also make 12volt toasters as well. Don't know how good they work though.

My wife runs a hair dryer and some kind of a hair straightener that gets so hot you could make grilled cheese sandwiches on it so I’m sure that as adventureduo says, with the right inverter you should be fine.

Toaster Thread
I use a toaster. It's pictured in the above thread along with power draw info. The lights don't dim but without the engine running the power panel shows the voltage drop and it's just down, down, down.

Any kind of resistance heating is going to use a bunch of juice. We have not had any problems running our microwave to this point.
An interesting comparison would be between a microwave and a toaster oven.

Hmm.....Is there a way to accurately gauge how much power you've drained from the batteries? Seems like you'd need that if you were running high-drain devices.
Thanks,

Man, you really have to be jonesing for toasted bread to use up that much juice.
Take a look at Jage's link. We've been her before.

Not exactly a toaster oven, but I have one on my Bronco that's given me a nice hot lunch on some cold days on the trail. It's designed to mount on a snowmobile muffler, but a "car" muffler is much bigger than a snowmobile muffler, so I have mine attached to my exhaust pipe (pre-muffler).

I say wrap whatever in foil and place it on the manifold. At the temps that these things run, you should have toasted anything in no time.

Yeah Too bad the dog house doesn't have a slot to slide stuff in.
