These containers are fairly sturdy, but the rigid plastic can shatter if abused. Being cylindrical, they waste a bit of space compared to a box-shaped container. Finally, the water fountain bottles aren't designed to be closed again once opened, so you'd have to find some kind of stopper. These fountain bottles are usually purchased full and returned empty for a $ deposit return. That's how we get our freshwater replaced when in Mexico -- at a water store, we buy a fountain container, pour its contents in our Sportsmobile's water tank, return it for a refill (and repeat until we're full), and finally return the empty bottle to get our deposit back.

What we use instead for extra water is a rectangular 5-gallon polyethylene container like this Coleman one below. The plastic is softer, and will rebound on impact (instead of shattering):

We've also tried collapsible 5-gallon containers like this one, but they don't close securely -- so leaking is a problem:

Geoff: I think Calclimber uses one of those 5 gallon Sparklettes type bottles.

That's nifty! I hadn't seen one like that before.

When I say they "can shatter" I just mean that's their failure mode -- but it's really difficult to actually get them to shatter. They can take quite a bit of abuse. I've successfully used them for moving lots of water drinking water for large "camping" trips where we've really beaten on them. In this image, the bottles served as the bottom layer of a truck completely filled with stuff:

Re: Water tanks?

Hi Andrew!

Yup exactly what I want!!! I have calculated approx 60 to 80 litres though for my Van
3m long pipe by 16cm diameter will give me 60 L

I will be on a trip soon but after that I will be installing water tank(s) and will share my setup

Thanks for the photos!

Re: Water tanks?

Hmm, in that photo it is really obvious that the hose and wand are always outside. Is there some kind of water quick disconnect that seals the tank (like an air tool quick disconnect)... not just for that wand but for any pressurized application?

Re: Water tanks?

Those garden hose ones don't seal well and when you remove them both sides are open, so you can't use them with a connection you have to close.
