The AC idea evolved from a combination of two vans we looked at buying after selling our Class C. One was an early Sprinter which vented the portable AC (either 10,000 or 12,000 BTU/HR in size) through a single hose connected to the passenger-door’s window, and the other had an 8,000 BTU/HR window AC mounted high in the cabinets (BTW, woodwork on that van was exceptional – very professional). Neither van had an open layout my wife could live with, so we (mostly me) decided to play around with building something simple ourselves.
I had decided that even if I used a portable AC, I’d permanently attach the discharge hose to a fixed port through the floor. The van with the window unit had vent holes crudely cut (irregular jagged cuts) into the inner skin panel just in front of the rear passenger-side tire. The holes allowed the AC to work OK in spite of small sizes but couldn’t be sealed when not in use.
