How Low Can You Go?
The other issue is getting the air out of the fuel system. This can be a real pain.

Yeah, I think that's an issue with all diesels. In the pre-emissions days, some diesel engines had priming bulbs to purge air in the fuel lines.

Re: How Low Can You Go?
Kinda makes you wonder how they start 'em the very first time.

Re: How Low Can You Go?
Factories have really nice fixtures and tools. They probably have a pressurized fuel line, just plug it into the test engine. The might even pressurize the oil system before trying to fire an engine.

Re: How Low Can You Go?
In the back of my mind I seem to remember something about the PCM limiting engine power to 50% when the fuel got low to indicate the vehicle had to be shut down before harm would be done to the motor. I thought somebody posted about that a long time ago. I'd sure what to know and it would probably take a load off Tom's point of view after reading all of this if it's true! After reading what I linked to, I have to admit I never heard of routine maintenance on injectors.
What would that cost?
Would you add it to a specific mileage schedule?

Re: How Low Can You Go?
Dave, what did I miss? I didn't see anything about routine maintainence of injectors.
And, I can't imagine what you could do without pulling them out - short of keeping good, clean oil in the engine and an additive in the fuel.

Re: How Low Can You Go?
Gas engines should not be run low either. The fuel return line returns hot fuel and the pump needs cool fuel to keep it cool. Running it almost out all the time shortens the intank fuel pump life.

Yeah I just read it wrong and was looking at the part where it was discussing if you have a problem.
My bad.

Re: How Low Can You Go?
Try searching on the terms "ULSD" and "injectors". Maybe it's marketing hype, but there are a lot of hits on those two terms together.
From Amsoil "The reduced sulfur levels in modern ULSD result in reduced lubricity, the property that controls wear in the fuel injectors and fuel pump. Improving lubricity in ULSD is difficult because it must be done without adding sulfur back into the fuel."
From Stanadyne (make of diesel additive AND an injector manufacturer) "Cleans and Protects - detergents and deposit modifiers help protect injection pumps, injectors, nozzles, etc.
Reduces Wear - lubricity improvers restore lubricity to ultra low sulfur and other low lubricity diesel fuels"

Re: How Low Can You Go?
I'm running the Ford stuff in my fuel. I had problems with EGR carbon buildup and they suggested that. Says it lubes the injectors.
Nobody can comment about the computer shutting down the engine before damage can be done to it? I plan to ask our shop at work about it. I didn't even know there was a chime alarm on low fuel...I've never even let it get to "E" mostly because i can't let the espar go below 1/4.
