V10 year interchangeability

05+ trans is a 5 speed called the Torqshift. It is much better all around than the e40d/4r100 it replaced but not to say the old one is bad. Better fuel mileage and less hunting with the 5 speed. Also, I've never heard of anyone destroying one. They're supposedly really tough. 4r100 is too, a better version of the e40d. It's the weakest (and oldest) of the 3 but it was behind the 7.3 for years and isn't at all a bad tranny.

As for the horsepower/torque of different years I bet CarringB knows.

The tow/haul mode on the 05+ models in the V10 is worth the upgrade for the newer tranny. It really works well in the mountains and downshifts in relation to your braking so you get the benefit of engine braking. It works extremely well based on my own experience having owned both trannies.
