Makalu1, when I contacted 3M they said this;
"Thank you for contacting 3M Automotive Aftermarkets.
For upholstery, 3M (TM) Headliner and Fabric Adhesive, PN38808 should work for your application. If you're wanting a double sided tape, PN06382 (1/2" X 20") plus the use of 3M (TM) Adhesion Promoter, PN06396, applied to the final, will work also."
I went with the Headliner and Fabric Adhesive PN38808 and backed it up with a 3m style duct tape. Reused the old vinyl and so far it's holding, but has only been a couple of months... Cleaning the old glue and tape residue was a mess and the use of GooGone was a definite necessity. If I have to do it again, I would have to seriously consider just using new vinyl and cutting some new hardboard door panels.
Good luck and cheers! -steve-
