This might be a little out of the box but have you thought about mounting a conventional panel on top of the A/C unit? In addition to solving your mounting location problem, it would shade the A/C from the sun and wouldn't add that much height.

BCam - yes I've considered it, but will see how much charge I can get out of the current setup before adding all that aerodynamic drag.

I wonder how material the drag would be. The frontal cross-section is pretty small and you could probably minimize it with a deflector of some sort.
