I have a Uniden Bearcat (scanner only)with an external antenna mounted using a bracket I fabricated from a piece of flat stock that bolts to the front fender mounting bolts and comes up between the fender and hood.

I have a General class ham license

I also have a couple BaoFeng hand helds I can hand out to folks I'm traveling with if they don't have one. I tune them to a GMRS frequency and then lock them so only the volume and push to talk works. I've considered getting a Spot, Inreach etc, but feel I'm covered with the PLB, with no further monthly or yearly fees. The wife would prefer something that will allow two way communication though, and might get me one for Xmas, but that's her decision. In a true emergency (medical, roll over, or something life threatening) I wouldn't hesitate to light off the PLB, but otherwise I'd try really hard to solve my own problems, even if I'm stuck for a few days because I don't want to waste SAR resources of endanger any responders.

I have a Uniden Bearcat BC355N mounted on the dash with velcro. It's far more user friendly and easier to manipulate than a hand held.

I have antennas on both sides, (ham and scanner) and there are lots of ways to run wires to the front. In some cases I have drilled a hole in the drivers side firewall, or the side of the engine box, just be damn sure that you look closely on both sides to avoid drilling into wires or connectors. On the passenger side there is a rubber plug between the interior and the fender well that I poked a hole in and pushed the coax through.
