Ok. Well we are now upgrading the engine, the entire engine! After we bought the SMB we drove it home from New Mexico with no problems except for a an indicator light that came on close to home (wrench indicator light). We took it to our long time mechanic who doesn't work on diesels he got the code and called another mechanic. He reset it and we decided we would wait to see if the light came on again.
Our son got married that weekend and we let him and our daughter-in-law take it to Yellowstone for a few days for their honeymoon. They had no issues until they were driving home and it died about 40 miles east of Boise. We had it towed ($175) to a Ford dealership in Mountain Home and there it sat for 5 days without being looked at. Finally, after frustration and talking to many diesel mechanics in the area, we decided to have it towed ($350) and have someone work on it who specializes in diesel motors. The Ford dealer finally plugged it in that morning ($58) and said it looked like the high oil pressure pump.
The specialized diesel mechanic says that it looks like the low oil pressure oil pump had been replaced because it still very shiny and clean. This means that something must have broken in the engine at some point because that's the only time you would replace this part. Sure enough, he got the engine out of the van and looked in the oil. There is a ton of metal shavings in the oil! UGH! Price tag $17K to get it fixed and upgraded to how it should be.
According to the person we bought the van from (who supposedly kept all receipts for work done on the van) the high oil pressure pump had been replaced (which it hadn't). There was paperwork for work on the pump but it was never replaced. Also, there is no paperwork for the low oil pressure pump being replaced??? So frustrating.
Well in the end I guess we get a brand new engine. Then the fun begins to add all the accessories.
