Thanks for all the feedback everybody. If I don't hear a serious objection by mid week, I'll probably go for it.
I'll probably stick with my original plan. I think I need more leverage than a shortie would provide. On a related note, I'm not worried about making it stiff and hard to engage - it already is

SMB West put short levers (cut the originals, thread the ends, screw the knobs back on) on my Atlas transfer case to allow the seat to swivel. They're a bit more difficult to operate but work well enough.

Quigley actually offers what they call a Breakover Shifter for that purpose. I had it done on my build. It unscrews out of the floor while in camp. I do not know that you could add it easily but you could call them.

Rest easy. Arcata hasn't changed a bit. And I've never claimed not to be crazy in other respects.
It's just that I'd never seen such a modification and wanted to be sure that there wasn't a deal breaker that I had overlooked. Thanks to all the great feedback here it looks like there isn't, so I'm defiantly going to get it done before our next trip.
