I use amateur/ham radio. People tend to be much more civil, and with the thousands of repeaters around the US, you can get lots of distance. I've got an iPhone app that will show me local repeaters (using my GPS). Much more useful in case of emergency.

You can 'hack' most ham radios to also communicate with GMRS/FRS - helpful if you are caravanning with others.

I've got a Kenwood TM-V71A in my other vehicle. Just bought the van a few weeks ago and still working on figuring out what I want in it. .
