Re: Super Camper Van Top, Another White Van Build
Thanks Rob, I'm going to wait for the rain to pass. That may put it off until Sunday or Monday, but I'll give you a heads up.
I saw you had Wilson up at Ricks earlier this week. The rig was looking good, maybe getting ready to go somewhere?
Roonie, good point with that boat example. I've had some experience with that myself. My feeling is that in my case, that not a lot of attention was payed to the sealing of fasteners as they passed through the fiberglass and wood. Besides that area of the boat where the outboard was attached constantly was wet and was attacked from both sides. In my case I will only be concerned with what may get thru from the outside. I will use Butyl putty whenever I can and a 3M 4200 white sealant for any attached from the outside. The photos tell the tail.
I've used this technique with a couple of Truck Campers in the past and it has worked well.

Jeez Rob, I was saving that for later. OK everybody, whenever you cut a hole in your roof I suggest you do it from the topside. I don't know if you can see in the photo but I cut into the 4x4 about an inch, no big deal, really, perfectly safe. Since I know you demand pics here ya go.
