OK, I ordered from Midwest Fuel Injection for $55/case of pint bottles, but that did NOT include shipping, which their online ordering system is quoting at $20, so the $67/case shipped that CanyonClan found is a great price.

Thanks Herb & Canyonclan - However, I'm not sure why you think that www.usdieselparts.com has free shipping on a case of the Stanadyne Performance Plus (12 pints). When I go through the check out process, the UPS Ground (5 - 7 days) comes out to an additional $13.34. They don't charge sales tax though, maybe that is what you meant. Also their shipping price isn't bad by any means.

That Stanadyne sounds pretty good. Maybe I'll order some. Anyone heard, or used, Red Line 85 Plus? Their 12 oz bottle is supposed to treat 96 gallons and do similar stuff. Quite a few truckers in our area swear by it. Thots??

My Espar/Airtronics diesel heater quit on me and I had it looked at by a dealer in Reno. My problem was that I would get an error code #52, and a lot of white smoke would come out of the exhaust, but it wouldn't fire. We pulled it apart and just put in a new glow pin, cleaned out the combustion chamber and all is well. They said all this was caused by the Red Line 85 fuel additive I was using. There was a lot of unburned diesel in the chamber and in the exhaust pipe, and the glow pin had a little deposit on it. Didn't look too bad to me, but what do I know. Bottom line is, Airtronics only certifies the Stanadyne additive. Two of the techs there said they wouldn't use any additive even though they sold the Stanadyne there. I also think I was adding more then the one ounce/eight gallons recommended. Kind of hard to guesstamate when pouring the stuff in. Anyway, a word to the wise....

Thanks for the heads up. I'm guessing (hoping), that it is not an issue to use fuel additives if you are not running the Espar furnace (e.g. summer months). I'm currently using the Amsoil additive since I received some with the oil I ordered for our first oil change. I'm planning on running a conservative amount of Stanadyne after I've used up the Amsoil or when I start using the furnace again.
I really think SMB needs to give the owners more information about the Espar system. I've also heard that you cannot use the Espar system with more that 5% biodiesel.

My Espar does the same thing and I have never used additives. SMB is looking at it now but don't know what they have found. Sometimes it works fine other times it smokes on startup then shuts down. It has also started to produce heavy smoke in the middle of the 2 hour run time. I actually thought that fuel additives might help...now???

Well Dave, now I don't know what to think. I was hoping that backing off on the additive would keep the problem from happening again. I also don't think it is just the Red Line 85 additive causing the problem and the Stanedyne being OK. Both additives advertise doing the same thing so I would think they're probably similar in what's in them. I don't know - anyway, I was planning on doing what sdwindansea suggests and only add it when I'm not planning on using the heater. Maybe just use the heavy dose to do a cleanout a couple of times a year?
Let us know what SMB comes up with on your problem.

I E-Mailed your post to SMB. I have always felt repair people find an excuse if you offer one. Additives might not be the problem at all, but interesting and helpfull. I have had codes F-30 (fan trouble) F-52 and 54 flame out and fuel problems but the (book) codes are at SMBW so I should not get too involved until SMB makes the final trouble shooting evaluation.
2 years of no problems and then all hell broke loose. But I usually can get it to work, just takes several re-starts. Funny, no trouble at all with the Airtronic only the Hydronic.
