Oil Cooler System and EGR replacement now avail for E-series

So far, my "bulletproofing" done at Zylstra seems to be yielding similar results. My focus was on opening up the intake and exhaust and the EGR. I also added an auxiliary transmission cooler for good measure.

I think monitoring the following temps for early signs of trouble is key to long-term success: oil, coolant, EGT, and transmission. I'm using the Edge Insight for that task, which I am quite pleased with.

Re: Oil Cooler System and EGR replacement now avail for E-se

I considered adding an auxiliary tranny cooler but was talked out of it. I tow a 3000lb trailer over long distances and don't even know it's behind me, so the weight isn't much of an issue. I've been seeing temps @158-170 at speeds between 62-70mph. 168-179 at 70-75mph. Ambient temp @56-68deg. On hills and mountain passes it'll spike up to 205 or so but then come right back down as I descend. What made you decide to install an auxiliary tranny cooler? What kind is it?

I'm currently living in AZ and the transmission temp was hitting the high end of "normal" range empty without a trailer in the heat of the summer.

Jess, what year is your van made? I am having trouble with my Insight CTS where I do not get EOT and TFT. Edge says they do not troubleshoot Econoline and I have to live with it. I can place a TFT through a 1/8" NPT port but not EOT. I have a 2010. Any thoughts?

Mine is an '09. For some of my temps I had to dig through various pages to find them.

Also, mine simply plugs into the port under the steering wheel. Then, it just works (thanks Zylstra!).

I doubt if that's much help. Sorry.

Did Zylstra do an EGR block on your van? I have discussed this with Sean. He said it is pretty easy on the vans. Now that I'm off warranty, I may have this done too.

Let's just say I went with Sean's recommendation and that I do not recommend doing anything to your emissions that might cause you to fail your smog test. ;-)

Also, I would look at the EGR replacement that was discussed at the beginning of the thread. At least for a cost comparison. My understanding is that it will pass CA smog and doesn't require re-flashing to avoid the check-engine light.

OBTW, make sure you include an SCT programmer in Sean's price to ensure you are looking at an apples to apples comparison. Also, if you are local to Zylstra's, you might consider ordering the EGR replacement and having Sean install it.

Re: Oil Cooler System and EGR replacement now avail for E-se

Well, it looks like I'll be going for a (partial) Bullet Proofing of my 6.0L

Over the course of my two week, 2200 mile roadtrip with my son (yeah, yeah, I'll post some pics), I observed the EOT-ECT differential get somewhat larger over our the course of our trip. No failure by any means, but I want to head it off before any problems start.

I found a place nearby that has been in business working on nothing but diesels since 1989 (Tarango's in Santa Paula), and I'll be dropping my van off next week to have them install a new oil cooler (updated Ford OEM) and while they're in there, have them install a Bullet Proof EGR Cooler. A bit more expensive than the Ford part, but I want it done right. They immediately knew what I was talking about, they had the right answers to all my questions, and they have the parts in stock.

Will post back on my post-install results and impressions with the fix, and with Tarangos.

10,000 miles since install and so far it's bulletproof. I'm very glad I did it. Good luck with yours.

I am sure this is asking for trouble but.....after doing all the "Bullet Proof" things can you increase power/torque with a tuner similar to the full size truck engines?
