Re: Somethings not right
FWIW they make mechanics stethoscopes and they are handy. To tell the truth I don't even know where the water pump is on my 6.0 but at least on older vehicles that was a sign of the water pump on its way out. On the work trucks I've had over the years, idler pullies have been a major problem.

Re: Somethings not right
Phil,
Years ago I had a clanking noise coming from the front of my f-250, 460. I would open the hood, I think every day. I was about to take it into the shop and I was washing off the engine and when I sprayed water on the pulleys the sound stopped. To make the story short, it was a small pebble stuck in the inside groove of the belt.
It's worth the try, maybe you can get lucky also.
Good luck,
Woody

Re: Somethings not right
All this time I thought a 6.0 was supposed to sound like a can of rocks!
A piece of hose can really help isolate sounds.

Re: Somethings not right
Even though I swore I would never take the van to a Ford dealership again, have an appointment there in the morning. Guess that's why I'm working so damn hard so I can afford to be ripped off at the dealership.
Will let you know where it goes.

Re: Somethings not right
Two dealers I have been very happy with are Magnussen Ford in Newark and Towne Ford in Redwood City.

Re: Somethings not right
Noise was the water pump, but apparently the fan clutch was bad as well (not the source of the noise though). Had a new belt put on while they had it apart too. Roughly $1300 out the door.
Glad I had it done before I head into DV tomorrow!

Resurrecting this thread because I think I may have a similar problem and need some advice. Like pjpvi, I have a noise that sounds like nuts and bolts in a blender, but in addition there is a noise like something is stuck in the fan. And it's loud! But it's also intermittent, which is curious. Of course it wasn't making the noise when I took it in to my mechanic. He listened with a stethoscope and took the belt off and wiggled everything and found no problems.
So good news, I guess, but I'm leaving Sunday morning to drive 2 days to the middle of Idaho for a river trip. I'm concerned about being stopped cold along the road by a failed water pump. Since there is no time to replace it before I leave, I'm thinking of buying one to have on hand in case of failure. I couldn't replace it along the side of the road, but at least I'd have the parts ready once I'm towed to a mechanic.
Can failing water pumps make a (loud) noise intermittently? 2005 5.4L gas, btw.
