In BC, you can get a ticket if you have food waste in your Trasharoo while in bear country.

Ok. So what do you do in “bear country”?
Bear container outside of the van?

Yeah. That is why I carry a couple of bear proof containers that I bought in the 80's for hauling food when backpacking and turned them into trash containers for the van. I also have a small Yeti cooler I can padlock to a tree if necessary.

I can’t imagine carrying trash in a Trasharoo. The only time I’ve done it is when heading to a trash can. It’s like setting candy out for critters in general much less bears. I use ours for storing C-Gear sand rugs that come out for our camps.

I’m getting ready to buy my third Trasharoo. The first two lasted 10 years so it’s not as bad as it seems but they do fall apart. I’m looking at the GARB bag at Adventure Trailer Gear. Not as pricey as some, quick response to emails, sturdy equipment.

A side note about food storage: backpacking many years ago in Robson Park where suspended storage structures were available at all open air camp sites (i.e, no cabin or other secure ground level facility), we saw that you should still close your food bag. Some guys woke to find their bread scattered around the camp by flying squirrels. That is, the bread they hadn’t eaten over night.

Small critters will most probably not get there, but racoons…?!
I wouldn't trust any of these bags against any critters. They are just canvas material, almost all of them. That said, like others here I have never used one for trash. I think the Trasharoo got it's name because it was catchy, I bet very few people use them for actual trash but that's just my guess.

For me it's a Firewoodwetshoedirtygearmessykiddogtoyaroo, but that makes a rather long name.

FWWSDGMKDT aroo? Reminds me of the 1990s Onion piece “Clinton Sends Vowels to Bosnia”

Trasharoo update

Me, mine only lasted a season or two YMMV

Racoons and Bears No way, they will get in

I had a racoon in Montana de Oro, mount my aluminus box
RotoMold Ice Chest strapped on
Got the box down and opened

When i herd the racket, i jumped out in my boxers
Saw immeadalty that the Racoon was close to my size (it seemed)
and let him have the contents

Ha! that brought back a memory - i'm still laughing (at myself).
Had a similar incident, but I jumped out with flashlight in hand, I looked around quickly but the racket stopped. So I started investigating around the van - at one point I was inspecting the area under the van (moving towards the front) and when I came up that bad-boy racoon was literally 3ft from me staring me in the eyes...I jumped back immediately.
He was just sitting on the hood of the van (passenger side) looking at me like I interrupted something. He was very calm and didn't seem to mind the company - at the time I was a little embarrassed about my response, but then no one was around to see.
Until I read your comment I had forgotten the incident altogether... find I still harbor the feeling I had been bullied by a 2ft tall intruder.

Happy to nudge the memory banks
