You don't have to fear the handle. The jack functions in such a way that it can only snap up on you if you let go of it before it locks into position at the end of the downward or upward movement. Since I only weigh 170# I need a cheater bar to get full leverage on the handle. An 18" piece of pipe works fine. I've used a Hilift aka "farm jack" for various purposes for 40+ years and the basic rule is .....only when perfectly vertical, never past 2/3 of the length of the jack, make sure the lift foot has a good grip. Used horizontally it becomes a great "come-a-long". Farmers and Ranchers have used them for decades to stretch wire fencing, pull steel posts, straighten a leaning hay stack, lull out a bent fender.....you name it.
