Bottle Jacks and changing tires

Somewhere on the forum, I saw a thread about bottle jacks and changing tires. My SMB came with a pretty whimpy screw operated bottle jack. It barely works on level ground in my driveway, and I don't think it would be much fun on the kind of terrain one usually associates with flat tires. I can't find the thread, but I remember the jack had a built in jack stand.

Can anyone give me any tips on what kind of jacks they've used and liked?

thanks..

Tom

Thanks for posting the Herb,
I'm also in the market for a replacement jack and that one looks like a good combination of form, function and price.
Tractor Supply has it at $39.99 on-line

with free shipping to the local store.
Changing a tire off pavement using just the original Ford jack looks like it would be an accident waiting to happen.

No sweat Dave, it was BryanLaws who clued me into that one. I agree about the combination of functions. I still haven't used it, knock on wood, but it stays in the SMB.

Re: Bottle Jacks and changing tires

I went with the bottle jack/jack stand from alltradetools that Herb mentioned, and it is great, at least for practicing in the driveway. It has a broad base and is very stable, plus as a shallow "U" head that sits well on the axle. I'm sure it will work well under primitive road conditions. The only drawback is that the 3 ton jackstand weighs nearly 3 tons. It fits in my under floor storage compartment too.

This thread reminded me to buy one. I just looked and can't find one from a place that will ship. Anyone have a lead on these?

Re: Bottle Jacks and changing tires

thanks for the tips everyone.

Maybe a silly question, this combo jack / jack stand is 21" tall, will it fit under an SMB axle when the tire if flat?

Re: Bottle Jacks and changing tires

With a range of 11" to 21", it could be a bit snug...
