Input and I have determined that this is due to the 4.25" backspacing and making the wheel travel further on a circle, rather than pivot.

4.25" BS doesn't mean much without knowing the wheel width. But since most 17" are about 8" that's what I'll go with. Aprox, 0 offset is about perfect for the wheel travel in a circle as you described. But that doesn't work all that well on Quigleys when you want larger tires. You need to tuck the larger tires inside the fenders so they don't hit the wheel arch. That's why a bigger BS is required. But as an example 4.25" BS on a 7" rim would work perfectly well, just not on anything wider.
It's the actual center point of the rim that matters, that's why offset is a better measurement to use over back spacing when fender clearance when turning is the issue, and backspacing is a better measurement to use when suspension clearance is an issue.

My 20" were 5.75 BS on 8.5" rim and 34" tires with 305 width worked well since they had a positive offset of about 25, or 1", only problem was limited steering.
I also have a 20" x 8.5 rim with 4.5" BS, 0 offset not even 33" on a 305 width fit with those.
My 17" are 8" wide and 0 offset, so 4.5" BS, they *just* fit with 285/75/17.

When going for new wheels, I decided to keep a slightly wider stance and limit my tire choice / width than go with wheels that tuck the tires in a bit, but allow me to run something bigger. I feel that gives the van a slightly better ride, and I can always trim the fenders if I want larger.

more about tires - 16" wheel on 4x4 2006 Quigley?

Sheepshagger

Awesome explanation. I have just come my local shop, where I spent over 4 hours trying to pick a combination that works, and of something that they can get.

My problem is fender rub. 285/70r17 on American Racing Mojave 17x8 with what I think is 0offset and 4.25 BS.

I want the motometal mo957 which they say is now discontinued. But stil avail online in places. It is 5.5BS +12offset, and 9" wide. Do you think that will work with the 285/70?

Using the same tire choice 285/70/17. The AR's will *just* fit if your front suspension hasn't sagged, or they will just hit, and you'll need to fold the fender in a bit, but only the passenger side at the rear. Personally, on an 8" rim a +12 offset would be absolutely perfect, but I don't know anyone who makes them except Walker Evans and they are ~$400 a wheel.
The 5.5bs +12offset on a 9" rim would place the outer edge of the rim at the exact same place as the 0 offset 8". BUT since the center would be further in by 0.5" the tire edge itself on that rim would actually be further in, so they may work a bit better than the AR's with 0 offset on 8" rim. But it's really hard to tell, tire choice will be really key, remember not all 285's are the same width, even though they should be.

Go with Jage's idea, that will work a treat.

You answered my question perfectly. That math is what I came up with too.

I'm going for it I think, and I always have jages solution too.
