Kinda like the Grand Canyon, you have to be below looking up to appreciate the size & complexity - marvels of nature.
Safe travels.
I know exactly what you mean. BTW, I just got back and am finishing up the report.

So I made a long day and stopped in Thompson. There was word of a possible overnight spot at the Thompson Christmas Tree Ship site. This site is not marked, but there is a small historical marker with information signs right on the river. See this link for info:
https://www2.dnr.state.mi.us/publica...C772006035.pdf

So there were a couple spots right on the lake, but also signs about "recreation permits required" so I opted to overnight in the huge park and ride lot that you pass on the way in. Worked great and we moved early the next morning to the parking spots. Wanted to get another sunrise over Lake Michigan:

From there, I headed east towards the Mackinac Bridge.

I headed south into MI Sat morning. Weather was very windy and rainy. Super heavy traffic going north and south, and traffic jams north of Flint.

From there I just continued through OH, PA, WV, MD to NOVA. Just transit driving via the interstate.

Since I cut this trip short, right now I plan to do a western trip next spring if life doesn't get in the way.
