West and North

All right, I'm heading out on another trip departing from the Washington, D.C. area. As the title states, I'm heading west (no kidding, right?) and north. I meant to get going long before now, but life got in the way.

As the weather is hot and I prefer to not run the A/C or stay in campgrounds, I've decided to head more northwest to start, go north around Lake Michigan and then pick up the TAT (https://www.transamtrail.com/) in MN through ID, maybe to OR. I also hope to do some backcountry travel in MT, WY, ID and CO. So the trip will be a mix of hard surface and dirt/gravel.

This trip could be a week or 6, time will tell, but I need to be back by about 1 Aug although that could change.

I was going to start the TAT in VA and take the southern route west, but I've done lots of those roads already and as mentioned, it is hot in the south.

Plan is to head west on Hwy 50 into OH, then head NW through MI across Mackinaw Bridge, then pick up Hwy 2 west along Lake Michigan. Haven't been to Green Bay, so I'll go through the city and head towards the end/start point of the TAT on the MN-WI border.

The plan may not survive the first day and route is subject to change on a whim's notice. I will update this thread as I can.

I'll be traveling in my 2008 GMC Savana Quigley SMB with a Weldtec lift. Photos from earlier trips:

If you have never been, you should get out to Oregon and Washington area. The Scenery is some of the best i have run across in my lifetime. The major cities like Portland i can live without, but you cant beat the scenery.

Thanks ScrapIron, agree.

I've been to OR and WA, multiple times. Lived in SoCal twice.

Now that's a great way to get out and explore, no hard agenda and only the foggiest of timelines. I'm envious of your itinerary

Totally jealous Chris! Mostly about the open schedule. Have fun.

No bike in tow this time?

Thanks everyone. My favorite way of traveling is meandering with no solid plans.

No bike in tow Eric, actually sold it and haven't replaced it yet. Didn't bring my new e-bicycle.

My white furred traveling companion, Veeta, is along. Looking for coons. If you look close you can

I do have a few nagging medical/physical issues so we'll see how far I get.

Chris, I'm with you on that - Some of the greatest experiences we've encountered were unexpected...Many times we pick either a place or activity, and the trip to and from is the true adventure.
Here's to safe travels which offer a couple WOW's along the way.

Just a thought since its a long trip, If needed I'd gladly lend you anything that may make it more convenient staying out of campgrounds (Honda Generator w/propane conversion, suitcase solar panels, etc). Got back this afternoon from 6 days in West Virginia, and have no plans that would include any of that gear till mid August.

Thanks Felix, in OH now,.and have what I need.

The plan didn't make it through first contact. I bailed from Hwy 50 about the middle of the state and headed north. Too many twisties. From macro perspective I'm still in the plan, not from a micro, so to speak.

I'm staying in a rural rest area by the Ohio River, actually stayed here before. Nice place to stop.

Hope to make it to just south of the Mackinaw Bridge tomorrow, there was a rest stop I stayed before.

Stop location:
