Cool design.

Eric, If you decide on the Sherman cap;
They are very well made. I ordered 4 a couple years ago so had a chance to handle them. My only suggestion would be you locate a thin flat rubber washer that would fit around the base (at the bottom of the threads), so when you screw the cap down on the base the rubber provides some resistance preventing the top from backing-off through constant vibration. I actually located washers which worked perfectly at a local Ace Hardware (EDIT: It may have been a West Marine). Ultimately I went a different route, and returned them.

It is interesting that your cane tips do not last. Mine have been on for several years and have not degraded. The thing I like about them is that they cover the entire female connector.

Maybe I just got some cheap ones. I got a few in a package and have been through a couple already. They do work pretty well though.

The Sherman cap is very nice, but I don't see why it can't be made out of plastic. Heck, I'm sure someone has 3d printed something similar. Unless you really beat on it, I'm sure it would hold up just fine.

That's exactly what I'm thinking. Very easy to 3d print something like that.
