I chopped up a BPA-free HDPE cutting board but didn't go as far as routing a juice channel.

There ya go! The real benefit is mobility - whatever you prepare on it, you can easily just pick it up and carry it outside (or wherever). Our cutting board has a magnet I attached to each of the 4 corners, and now sits securely on the top metal cover of our propane burner lid on the countertop. We prepare all kinds of stuff on it (predominantly meats & cheeses to accompany our wine), then just pick it up and carry it over to where we are sitting - very convenient & handy.
I really like how you have these boards laying across the top of the drawers - your design has me thinking about doing the same with two or three drawers. Really doesn't infringe on the available space inside, but they are great for extra counter space when needed.
