We just bought the Garmin 700i. It has 2-way messaging and 24/7 SOS via satellite (subscription required), and a slew of really helpful features. I also like that you can also use a AA battery pack with it if it runs out of juice. I have only played with it in the house, so I haven't used it in the field, but it seems really handy.

I'm a big fan of my Ipad using a Ram mount and a Duel Bluetooth GPS receiver. It's much easier to view the screen while driving than a phone. I'm running several different mapping programs including Gaia, You need a map, Scenic map, Scenic map Canada, and Google maps. Each one seems to have slightly different information and when put all together presents more options.

Are you using it as a handheld, for hiking? For vehicle use I have mine in the Garmin Rugged Mount so it runs off the vehicle's 12 volt power all the time. NEVER runs out of juice and the screen stays at full brightness.

Have you tried Gaia on your phone with downloaded maps?

There are a number of”off road” GPS units including Montana. I use an Android phone ad tablet with OsmAnd+ and Locus Map Classic apps with downloaded maps.

Take a look at the Garmin Tread. It's the same case size as the Zumo XT, but has offroad trail maps preloaded.

Personally, I would use a phone or tablet with a GPS chip and an app with downloaded maps. No cell coverage needed.

Some people want a dedicated GPS. Too many issues for me so I do the above and I like the map detail.

I don’t use the Gaia GPS app, but know people who do. Subscription is $2-4 a month.

My Android apps don’t have subscriptions but Locus has a subscription version I believe.

Google maps are not good for off road and need cell coverage unless you download a section of map like when navigating.

For people who want a free option for iOS, OsmAnd is worth a look. It uses Open Streetmap data and a certain number of map downloads are free. However it will only show you the roads, it won't show you usage restrictions or things like that -- for that you need something more offroad-focused.
