I am looking for a good satellite navigation device for off-road navigation. I don't have an iPhone and like my Garmin Nuvii for road navigation. Is anyone using the Garmin Tread? Other suggestions? https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/862533/pn/010-02406-01
I use a cellular equipped 11” iPad M1 with no data plan and Gaia GPS. It has a much larger screen than the Tread which I really like as I can see more of the area that I am traveling through. Gaia has all sorts of maps that you can add to it and then download the area you will be traveling through.

I use an android phone with various apps including Locus Pro, OSMAnd Pro, CoPilot. The phone has an inactivated sim and only uses GPS for navigation, stays in airplane mode, and WiFi for downloading/uploading. It is a bigger phone, but not iPad size.

Another vote for a tablet or spare phone tasked with GPS only. It's the cheapest option and Gaia can't be beat. There was a 40% off sale going on for Gaia Premium the other day which knocked it down to about $24 per year. Check it out.
Gaia on my phone (and my wifes... and on our iPad... just in case display/ device breaks) + Garmin inReach Mini for emergency communication and using the 3 presets for status updates
... which will turn that Apple product into a GPS product.
I myself use a big Samsung tablet with a huge SD card so I can download as many GAIA maps as I want, and I employ a cup-holder-mounted tablet holder that allows both front-seat passengers to see it. This works well. Amazon has a wide variety of them
Just sign up to gaiagps.com and get the phone app. It works, it's reliable. You can download maps of specific regions to your phone/pad. Never had an issue with it.
Indeed, I have used both. OnX has a couple of features that work well. Great to try a few… crossed Northern and Southern Empty Quarter a few times and prefer OnX. Worth a look.
