Re: Vans such large targets for the police

Hope this is helpful
Every time you cross the US border with Canada the border patrol has access to your full file of every infraction you ever had. much more than the local police. So any past trouble or being pulled into the Border office at a crossing is logged.

Think about making a small donation to organizations that will provide you with stickers and lic plate holders that display your spirit of taking care of those on the force.
Reminds me of the saying you get more bees with honey.....

For California join the CHP 11-99 association. With membership you can get lic plate holders that show your support for widows and orphans of those officers who lost their life on the job. It has saved me many times.

Post a window sticker that you support your local police.

Maybe I have just been lucky in the past to get off with warnings in CA.

Ketcham- you are not the only one stopped on the bridge over Lake Champlain from VT to NY.

It is also true that Oregon and WA state police seem to think it is good sport to pull over those of us in larger vehicles so play the game and give them reason to apologize for wasting your time.

A buddy told me about this and claimed it did indeed worked, but I thought only law enforcement (current or past) could get them. Was he talking of a different plate that identifies them as an officer? He did call it an 11-99 frame.

Re: Vans such large targets for the police

Here is the link to information on how to join the CHP 11-99 association and get the license frame. It's amazing how much money people will pay to hopefully get out of a speeding ticket. The license frame will cost you $2500. Since I have not had a speeding ticket in almost 20 years, and that speeding ticket cost me $80, I suppose one would have to be a real speed-demon to justify this expense. Or, they'd really have to be dedicated to the cause of the 11-99 association.

Re: Vans such large targets for the police

Having spent quite a bit of time on the east coast, I always found it amazing how many jurisdictions had "Friends of the ___" (fill in the blank law enforcement org) decals. I always assumed it was a please-don't-give-me-a-ticket decal. Always rubbed me completely wrong and as completely unethical.

Re: Vans such large targets for the police

The CHP 11-99 Foundation has a lifetime membership as well. In the old days lic plate frames were only $10. There are many different levels of giving to the organization. it is a worthwhile cause.

At the very least the police approach the vehicle with respect and that is the best way to start.
What happens after that is up to you whether you get a warning or ticket.

There are other causes and local police type organizations you should support and display your support openly.

My family has a long history with the POW-MIA organization and I display the black POW flag at the rear side of my van. Perhaps the flag may be for you, I am only saying that if you use your imagination about how to display your support may be well received by others.

Re: Vans such large targets for the police

Most of the "organzations" are tax deductible for your contributions. That is a very good point not to be overlooked. Especially, if you spend a lot of time in your SMB.

My take was that the original post dealt with the police not being as polite as they should be when pulling some people over.

I think that displaying something that conveys your support could prove to be a nice buffer in how you may find yourself being treated.

I like to fly the behind my rig with a POW flag in the side window of my vehicles.

As far as the CHP 11-99 organization in CA - they seem to be quite costly. I joined decades ago and thought they had an annual membership for a few hundred dollars if one did not want to become a lifetime member.

Re: Vans such large targets for the police

If the CHP 11-99 is a legit organization that's great. Back in the day I tried to be a telemarketer for a similar organization in Indiana, but it was all about making heavy commissions off of peoples' donations and none of the cops I asked about it ever heard of it- I don't think much of the dollars were getting through to the "fund". While big selling point was to let people assume they'd get out of a ticket, it was made clear we weren't to ever say that. Proud to say I only lasted a few hours there.

Re: Vans such large targets for the police

I must be lucky. On my first major road trip out west with my new SMB and with 3 days of driving ahead of me I got a case of lead foot. Rounding a bend with SMB trailer in tow I came upon a speed trap by Peoria, IL finest. Slamming on the brakes I passed him with both trailer tires locked up, trailer tires smoking, screeching, and leaving two big black streaks down the concrete highway. Needless to say I pulled over right away knowing I was busted. The officer didn't even leave the side of the road just pulled in behind me. I had my DL and registration ready and both hands on the wheel when he walked up. When asked where I was going so fast I nervously said "Hunting in Utah, we got a long way to go", realizing I just admitted to having firearms in the van (ammo in the trailer). DOH!

Either I was lucky or he cut me a break b/c .5MPH faster and I would "have gone right to jail". It was early Sunday morning so maybe he didn't want the hassle, who knows. He was actually super cool about the whole thing, cut me ticket (only $150 - really?!?!) and just said slow down and have a safe trip. I mailed the ticket payment 2 days later in CO.

I learned a few things:

1. My van only gets 9MPG going that fast with the trailer
2. The stock brakes on these rigs are marginal
2. Slow the F down and keep some distance ahead of me
3. Keep my mouth shut

Re: Vans such large targets for the police

Never been pulled over in nearly six years of SMB ownership. I usually do 5 over the limit on long hauls, but have exceeded that on occasion.
