Re: Vans such large targets for the police

Never been pulled over in the SMB either. Nor in any other vehicle for that matter. I drive like Grandma Moses and in exchange for no tickets, often get an earful of static from my wife and kids about driving too slow. My standard reply "do any of you know how long it takes to stop an 11,000 pound van going 70mph.......too long!".

Re: Vans such large targets for the police

Pulled over by LAX police at checkpoint Charlie. They asked if it was ok to inspect inside, reply "what choice do I have?" Sat for about 5 minutes as they asked me about the driveline, 4X4 conversion, interior options and of course "how much does something like this cost?". I obliged with the normal response "If you have to ask..."

Re: Vans such large targets for the police

Never got a speeding ticket....but a trooper did follow me on the highway and even in to the "bush village store" and walked up to me, while I was loading groceries. Nice guy...always wanted a SMB etc. We talked for 45 minutes...showed him the rig etc. He did ask why the floor was raised and whats under it. I assume wires/plumbing etc. fortunately he left it at that.
Never do know how to answer when frequently asked how much does this rig cost??...but I do like that "more than a Hummer."

Re: Vans such large targets for the police

Not sure what it is about the SMB attracting LEOS but while camped at a major airshow I was parked along the road that led to the staging area for all the LEO's and danged if I didn't get the looks from almost all of them passing by for 4 days. One small town cop didn't know I had called ahead and got permission to park overnight and when we talked he said he was sure he had a high powered drug runner or such......until he got the info from his partner, then I gave them the grand tour! hahah

Re: Vans such large targets for the police

Just remember, before you can get a ticket the first thing that must happen - the cop must notice you. So, the little VW zips by your van while you have the officer's full attention. Who will get the ticket? Only the one he noticed.

Our vans get alot of attention, everyone sees them. Even the people that don't like or understand our vans see them.

If you drive an attention getting vehicle, stay within the letter of the law to keep from getting stopped.

Re: Vans such large targets for the police

Mike convinced me to drive my van slower about a year ago. Now I know I'm not speeding because I don't go over 70 ever. The speed limit on the highways in Nevada is 75 mph and in some spots in Utah it's 80 mph. I still only go 70. It seems so much more relaxing. Don't have to keep looking for Johnny Law!

Re: Vans such large targets for the police

No more then 5 over and Im good and ya 80 in Utah Im 75 just to much fuel.

Also PO had a emblem on the door and it seems to get me out being hassled by rangers and LE while boon docking it. I have had them drive up put a light on me and drive off.
