Engine just died.
I spent a lovely day in the hills on Sonora Pass until my engine died. Thank God I wasn’t in the back country yet. I had forgot my Sat phone but figured I would be OK for the limited off roading I was planning on. I was lucky to drift down the hill to a pay phone so someone was lookin out for me.
No idiot lights came on and the Check Engine light stayed dark as well. The engine would crank but not turn over. I thought maybe the crash switch had tripped but still no start after I tried to reset it. Checked the alarm and looked at the mass under the hood, like that would help.
The problem was the IPR or IPC sensor failed. I’m told this sensor monitors the high pressure oil system and when it goes out it’s like somebody turned off the key. The only solution is to diagnose the problem and change it. I don’t know if it’s accessible to the backyard mechanic but you need to be able to figure out what’s wrong first.
I spent the night in the parking lot of Hammond Ford in Sonora.
I had some brews, but with cameras on me in the parking lot and no john I couldn’t even create some artificial happiness. Maybe I’ll throw that thing back in. It sure as hell could have been worse so I actually feel lucky. Took em about 3 hours to get me back on the road.

The Diesel relies on oil pressure in the fuel system some how, and IIRC if there is not enough oil it is really easy and quick to damage your engine, so the cut off is a safety factor.
What a drag. I can't imagine getting towed out of the places I've been, and they aren't even that bad.

Anyone have any info on where the sensor is and if it's something that can be done on the trail? I go places that a tow truck can't go even if I could afford to pay them.

Problems related to the high pressure oil sensor/system seem to be a relatively common event. I'd also be curious if this problem can be fixed DIY or only at a dealer.
Glad you were only out of action for a relatively short period of time.

While driving back with the tow truck driver I asked if I had got to where I had planned to go, how would they get me out? 200 buck an hour! I was told that these guys are high but that's expensive. It takes a special tow rig. With a dead engine you have very limited brakes and steering. That means the tow has to ease you down hills from behind I would think. What about some of the jeep trails I like to run? I think of the times I have been up on easy ones like Bald Mtn above Fresno. Jeess, it would take a few grand to get me out of there. I'm actually thinking of keeping something on board that will read the problem code and have a mechanic come up to make repairs. Humm...need to find "Have tools will travel". I couldn't even get my hands into the area to change the cam sensor.

G R E A T !! give me all this great info..... right before we head off into 300k acres where there are no paved roads.
NOW I really want to hear about whether that part is a DIY replacement.

Ahh, I remember my first tow truck. Kind of like your first .... , but not as fun.
Then there was the second tow truck from in front of my house..... Not as exciting.
Be happy it wasn't your high pressure oil pump. I had to leave my van for a week in Bishop to get it replaced while I continued my trip in a rental pickup.
Glad you got it taken care of in short order and got back on the road.
